What factors determine your perfect blend?
Herbs and spices are essential for the taste and character of dishes. Dried herbs offer the possibility to preserve flavors all year round. When making spice mixes, it is important to create a balanced mix that not only flavors the dish but also captures the essence of a particular cuisine. Let's look at the most important factors that characterize a good spice mix and an example from Greek cuisine.
Important factors for a good herbal mixture
- Flavor Balance: A spice blend should balance different flavors: hot, sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. For example, when making a curry, a combination of turmeric (earthy flavor), cumin (warm and slightly bitter), and coriander (fresh and citrusy) can help create a balanced blend.
- Application of base making: In mixes like tzatziki mix, fresh and slightly sour flavors are important. Ingredients like dill, garlic powder and mint enhance the fresh, creamy yogurt base in tzatziki and give the dish its recognizable flavor.
- Origin and authenticity: Different cuisines have characteristic herbs and uses. For example, Greek cuisine uses a lot of oregano, thyme, and dill. Mixing these herbs can provide an authentic Greek taste experience.
- Freshness of herbs: When using dried herbs, it is important to use fresh, aromatic herbs. Dried oregano and thyme, for example, quickly lose their flavour intensity. MATALA herbs carry the HACCP label and guarantee freshness, purity and intensity.
- Properties and dosage: Each spice has its own flavor, so it’s important to experiment with the right proportions. For example, in a curry, a little clove can be very powerful, while in a tzatziki mix, a higher proportion of dill and less garlic powder will give a milder flavor.
Example: Greek Souvlaki Mix
A typical Greek herb mix for souvlaki consists of oregano, thyme, and dill with a pinch of garlic and lemon zest. This mix gives the meat the amount of flavor and ensures that the taste remains authentically Greek. Add olive oil and lemon juice to make the whole thing even more intense and fresh.
With the right balance and care in choosing and blending spices, you can transform any dish into an authentic taste experience that does justice to traditional cuisine.
