JONI MITCHELL: "The next day I rented a VW Bug and we drove 45 miles to Matala, a fishing village on the south coast. There were no houses in Matala, just two supermarkets, a bakery where the owner made fresh yoghurt and bread, a shop with the only telephone in town, two cafes and a few rental huts."
PEACE & LOVE
From the mid-1960s, the hitherto quiet fishing village was overrun by hippies who found a home in the caves. Among them were celebrities such as Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, George Danzer Cat Stevens and possibly Bob Dylan. Mitchell wrote the song Carey about her stay in Matala. The hippies were expelled in the 1970s by the church and the military junta.
