From the mid-sixties, the until then quiet fishing village was overrun by hippies who found a home in the caves. Among them were celebrities such as Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Georg Danzer Cat Stevens also possibly Bob Dylan. Mitchell wrote the song Carey about her stay in Matala. The hippies were driven out in the 1970s by the church and the military junta.
